Six Week Theater Run The Big Magic Show
In some places, six weeks is considered a long theater run.
But I was still sad when it was over… Until the next one!
The stage was foggy and the searchlights flew around, after the drum-roll the pretty and feminine voice of my lovely assistant Celeste comes from overhead…
"Ladies and gentlemen please welcome, the must-have mustache magician… Elias Caress!"
Then begins the exotic music of Korla Pandit and I take the stage dressed in the sparkliest red tuxedo possible.
"Abracadabra!" I shout as I produce my first dove, then it vanishes just as quickly.
I then silently manipulate balls, silk handkerchiefs, flash paper, wands, and other cliche yet wonderful items.
The show proceeds with illusions, juggling, stunts, escapology, jokes, physical comedy, whips, and even hundreds of dollars in prizes donated by local businesses are given out during the game show bit.
I don’t often get to perform in a nice theater with sophisticated lights and sound. I usually perform at corporate and company functions, business meetings, conventions, holiday parties, fairs, festivals, etc. I was excited to work with the technicians!
Also I felt super spoiled when I also got a director, stage manager, and even a creative consultant!
As a one man show performer, I usually have to do all of those jobs myself. With this team not only was my job easier, but the show was much smoother and more amazing than I could have done myself.
This was a family show, in my opinion the most difficult.
Why is a family show the most difficult?
Because it’s all ages. If the audience were only from one demographic, it’s much easier to play to that demographic. For example, for an entirely adult crowd you can make topical jokes about current events that an educated and cultured society would appreciate. For an all child audience, you can hit yourself in the head and the kids will roar with laughter!
For all ages show, every bit or number you perform must be simple, direct, and entertaining. The adults are grateful for the humor I slip into the visual magic routines, as the wizards of Disney so masterfully do! And the children are enthralled at the sight of a beautiful and mysterious illusion.
The feedback from the show was astounding. Several parents thanked me for putting on a show that they enjoyed… "I was dreading having to sit through a kids show, but I loved it!" Several people told me this was the greatest magic show they’ve ever seen!
The theater management told me that they would like to book me again because mine was the easiest production they’re ever had to work with!
I would like to thank some of the businesses who donated to the Big Game Show…
